Juneteenth 2019

While the actual holiday of Juneteenth the historical importance is paramount any day of the year !! In the wake of the senseless and unwarranted murders of George Floyd and Breiona Taylor, something snapped in me right along with the rest of the world. I've spent most of my life navigating in and out of predominantly white spaces. Prejudice has been my reality, but I can't protest in silence anymore. My heart broke as my 18-year-old son spent the last part of his senior year. The time when your executing senior prank, class day, finalizing college plans, he was out with his friends protesting, making his voice heard. This year I had the opportunity to chat with local historian Sharon Sanders Brooks. As I saw all of the Juneteenth posts all over my timeline, I didn't feel comfortable posting a meme when the historical importance of Juneteenth was foreign. I'm a dork, and I want to know what I am celebrating. I want my children to know what we're honoring. It's is a movement, not a moment.
